Iran Visa – Complete Guide for Tourists

Whether you are planning a cultural adventure or a relaxing getaway, obtaining your Iran visa is the first step. This comprehensive guide covers everything you need to know — from visa types and requirements to the application process, validity, and tips for a smooth entry.

Who Needs an Iran Visa?

Most foreign travelers require a tourist visa to enter Iran.
However, citizens of the following countries can visit without a visa:
Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bolivia, Georgia, Lebanon, Malaysia, Syria, Turkey, Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Ecuador.
All other nationalities must apply for an Iran visa before traveling.

Iran e-Visa vs. Visa Authorization Code

You may encounter different terms like Iran eVisa, electronic visa, authorization code, reference number, invitation letter, or tourist visa.
These all refer to the same document required for tourists to enter Iran. Don’t worry about the terminology — it’s essentially one type of visa.

What is an Iran e-Visa?

Since 2017, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has introduced an online visa application system called e-Visa.
Instead of visiting an embassy first, travelers can submit their application online and receive an authorization code (also called a visa reference number) that allows them to collect their visa upon arrival or at an Iranian consulate.

How to Apply for an Iran Visa in Advance

With our service, the process is fast and simple:

  1. Fill out a quick online application form (takes less than 5 minutes).

  2. Pay the service fee.

  3. We handle the paperwork and get your authorization code from the MFA.

  4. Receive your code by email within a few days.

You can then collect your visa from either:

  • An Iranian embassy/consulate, or

  • An international airport in Iran (if eligible).

Tip: Specify your preferred visa collection point in the application form.

How to Get an Iran Visa on Arrival (VOA)

The Visa on Arrival (VOA), also known as the Iran airport visa, is available to citizens of over 180 countries when entering Iran.
Since August 2017, travelers must first submit an application via the Iranian government’s e-Visa portal at least 2 days before their arrival to qualify for VOA. Apply here

When you arrive in Iran, simply present your application submission receipt to the visa desk at the airport. The officer will process your details and issue your Visa on Arrival on the spot. Learn more about Iran VOA website at least 2 days before arrival to obtain VOA eligibility.
Upon arrival, present your application receipt to the airport visa office and collect your visa.

Best Time to Apply for an Iran Visa

We recommend applying 3–4 weeks before your trip.
In most cases, the authorization code arrives in just a few days.
If you’re collecting the visa from an embassy, allow extra time for the visit.

Visa Duration, Extension & Validity

  • Standard tourist visa: 30 days (single entry).

  • Extension: Up to 60 additional days (in two 30-day increments).

  • Validity: 3 months from the issue date.

To extend your Iran visa, you need to visit the Police Department of Aliens Affairs. The offices are open Saturday to Wednesday from 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. These offices are usually crowded, and little work is done after midday, so it’s better to go early. Also, check Iranian national holidays to avoid any delays.

Special Rules for US, UK, Canadian & Irish Citizens

Citizens of the USA, UK, Canada, and (since May 2022) Ireland must travel with a licensed tour guide during their stay.
This doesn’t mean constant supervision — you’ll still enjoy free time and flexibility.
We can arrange licensed guides starting from €45/day.

Visa Rules for Pakistani Citizens

Pakistani passport holders are not eligible for Visa on Arrival.
They must apply through an authorized agency and follow the same process and requirements as other nationalities.

Visa-Free Entry Zones

Travelers eligible for VOA can enter the following free trade zones without a visa for up to 14 days:

  • Kish Island

  • Qeshm Island

  • Chabahar

  • Aras

  • Anzali

  • Arvand

  • Maku

Note: To leave these zones and enter mainland Iran, a visa is required.

US Visa Waiver Program & Iran Stamp-Free Policy

Visiting Iran does not prevent you from entering the USA.
Since 2018, Iran has adopted a stamp-free entry policy, meaning no Iranian visa or entry/exit stamp will appear in your passport.
This helps travelers maintain eligibility for the US Visa Waiver Program.
